Lolium spp. hybrids & varieties

Yorktown III

Source - Yorktown III is an advanced-generation synthetic cultivar selected from the
maternal progenies of 13 clones. The parental germplasm were collected from Central
Park, New York City, Riverside and Paterson Parks in Baltimore, MD, and old lawns,
parks, and sports fields in New Jersey and southwestern Pennsylvania.

Method of Breeding - Following varying cycles of phenotypic and genotypic recurrent
selection, the 13 maternal clones of Yorktown III were selected from five separate
breeding composites. Selection was based on attractive appearance, fine leaves, dark
green color, medium-low growth profile, good seed yield, and relative freedom from
disease.

Intended Use - Cool-season turfgrass; also for fall overfeeding of dormant warm-season
grasses.

Description - An attractive, persistent, lower growing turf-type cultivar capable of
producing a turf with a fine texture, medium-high density, and a reduced rate of vertical
growth. It has darker green color than most commercial ryegrass varieties. It is also
endophyte enhanced.

Adapted to - Wherever cool-season grasses are found.
