Lolium spp. hybrids & varieties

SR 4200
Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

Seed Research of Oregon and Crop Science Dept. of Rutgers Univ. - M.F.
Robinson, Leah A. Brilman, B.A. Adams and C.R. Funk.

Source - Plants collected from old turfs in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and
Pennsylvania from 1962 to 1977.

Method of Breeding - Superior plants selected from closely mowed turf plots and
spaced plants. Intercrosses were employed to initiate multiple cycles of population
improvement including phenotypic recurrent selection in spaced-plant nurseries, disease
screening, and progeny evaluation in closely mowed turf trials. From this, 90 parental
clones were selected from a spaced-plant nursery containing 8,000 plants based on low
growth, attractiveness, medium-early maturing, and high seed yield potential. Syn-I seed
was produced in isolation and 4,550 progeny from the 90 clones were established at
Corvallis, OR. From these, 1,214 progeny were selected based on disease resistance,
seed yield, and uniformity with breeder seed produced. Plants contained high levels of
Lolium endophyte.

Intended Use - Home lawns, school play areas, parks, sports fields, and golf course
tees, fairways and cart paths where adapted. Fall and winter overseeding of dormant
warm-season turf where its lower growth profile makes it particularly useful.

Description - Lower-growing turf-type ryegrass of medium-early maturity and improved
mowing qualities. High tillering produces fine-textured, leafy, dense turf that is less likely to
become stemmy. Bright dark-green color and good tolerance of temperature extremes.
Excellent seedling vigor, wear tolerance, and recuperative ability. Medium-high resistance
to net blotch, and improved resistance to brown patch and moderate resistance to stem
rust. Presence of the Lolium endophyte for insect resistance and endophyte-enhanced
performance.

Adapted to - LRR A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, L, M, N, P, R, S (I, J, O, T, U, V for
overseeding); PHZ 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 (portions of 8, 9, 10 for overseeding).
